About Dr. Gabe
Gabriel Alejandro San Román was born in La Plata, Argentina in 1960 and his parents immigrated to the U.S.A. on December 23, 1963. They arrived with their four sons (Guillermo, Gerardo, Gabriel, and Gustavo) to seek the “American Dream”. His parents, Guillermo (a NYC Engineer) and Gloria (a Spanish Dance Professor at Juilliard) raised their children with love, kindness and the perfect balance of science and art. Despite not being able to speak or write in English, the four San Román brothers excelled in New York public schools and went on to graduate from Penn State and Johns Hopkins Medical Schools. The four brothers have been practicing medicine in New York for the past 35 years and have blessed their parents with 17 grandchildren.
Dr. San Román was fascinated to observe for the first time, a human embryo under a microscope at North Shore University Hospital in 1984 with Dr. David Rosenfeld. This inspired him to pursue a life-long career in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI). After graduating from OB/GYN residency training at Robert Wood Johnson and marrying his soulmate Michele, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in REI at the UCLA School of Medicine/Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
In 1991, he was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of OB/GYN, SUNY @ Stony Brook under the direction of Dr. Robert Barbieri. Within 4 years, he was promoted to Chief of REI at the age of 35, directed the OB/GYN teaching program of the 2nd and 3rd year medical students and developed a large clinical practice in REI. He covered L&D at night training many of the OB/GYN residents who now practice on Long Island. In 1995, he was awarded over eleven million dollars from the NIH to conduct the Women’s Health Initiative Study, which is the largest randomized clinical trial in women to date.
In 1997, Dr. San Román created a partnership with IntegraMed America (the number 1, IVF management company in the US) and moved on from Stony Brook to become Chief of REI at Winthrop University Hospital. While continuing to teach OB/GYN and conduct research with the residents, Dr. San Román began expanding the clinical practice of REI. He recruited ten REI physicians and opened private offices in Stony Brook, West Islip, Mineola, Downtown Brooklyn, and Westchester. In his role as CEO and IVF Laboratory Director, he was responsible for overseeing one of the largest REI companies in New York State.
On December 10, 2012, Dr. San Román joined Northwell Health and was appointed Clinical Associate Professor, Department of OB/GYN, Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra and Director of Strategic Initiatives. In 2019, the first REI Fellowship on Long Island was established at Northwell Health by the REI team and many research projects have been presented Nationally and Internationally by the Medical Students, Residents and Fellows. Over the past twelve years, Dr. San Román’s Northwell Health Fertility clinical practice has brought over 4,000 babies into the world with patient experience scores in the top 2% of the country.
Dr Gabe has now joined his distinguished colleague Gregory Zapantis at NYRW and his commitment to personalized care ensures that each patient receives a thorough evaluation and a tailored treatment plan that aligns with their unique needs and circumstances.

He is a strong advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and provides customized care to ensure that all individuals and couples, regardless of their background or orientation, receive the support they need to build their families. His warm and empathetic demeanor has made him a trusted and beloved figure in the field of reproductive medicine.
Outside of his professional achievements, Dr. San Roman has been married to his wife for over 35 years. They enjoy time with their four children traveling, scuba diving and skiing. They are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their first grandchild.
